With the vision of creating a vertically integrated, Alfalfa and Clover production company, founding partners Ross Downs, David Pengelly, Dennis Jury and Mark Harvey joined forces in 2003 to create Seed Genetics Australia.
Sharing a wealth of industry experience each saw value in establishing a research and development program to improve upon commercial varieties of Alfalfa, White Clover and Clover for the domestic market. The term “Genetics” was employed to describe the company’s strength in plant development and non-biotech breeding which has become the backbone to the company’s success.
In as little as eleven years, the company’s “glasshouse to warehouse” strategy saw SGA grow to develop numerous new pasture seed and fodder crop varieties for its clients who primarily supply the meat, wool and dairy livestock industries, worldwide. Through careful plant selection, SGA’s strong grower base has been consistent in producing high quality forage products that continually top national and international commercial trial programs.
In 2012, Seed Genetics Australia took on the more appropriate name of Seed Genetics International (SGI) which was a reflection of the markets they service. SGI’s market driven approach caught the attention of NASDAQ listed, Californian based, S&W Seed Company who saw a good opportunity to diversify their business and expand operations through a mutual partnership.
